Teaching mixed-ability classes can be very challenging. Some writers have recommended the use of ‘differential teaching’ techniques involving extensive preparation of varied-level tasks; but who has the time for this? In this session we’ll be looking at and trying out a series of practical teaching principles, illustrated by actual activities, that involve very little (or no) extra preparation, but that can make our job teaching mixed-ability classes easier, and that go some way towards bringing about more effective learning and better learner motivation.
