In September 2014, Statistics Canada published a document titled ‘Population projections: Canada, the provinces and territories, 2013 to 2063’. One of the most important findings was that: “In all scenarios, migratory increase would remain the key driver of population growth over the next 50 years, as has been the case since the early 1990s”. Such moves have made the future of international education in North America more uncertain than it has been for many years, even for many decades. In this keynote presentation we will, then, look at some of the significant developments in ELT in Canada in the last 50 years, to see if they can help us understand what we may be facing in the future.
