Conditionals in Context: When the Grammar Texts don’t Align with Authentic Texts

EAL, particularly discipline-specific EAP instructors, need to take a more critical stance towards what structures they teach and texts students encounter. In this workshop we focus on examples of conditional language well beyond “if clauses” in Political Science and Physics texts. We demonstrate lesson development for our first year students, building on familiar structures and extending to unpacking the underlying conditional aspect in atypical structures manifest in their course readings.
