Indigenous Language Revitalization as Second Language Acquisition

I will discuss the efforts that are being made in the field of Indigenous language revitalization here in B.C. While language revitalization has an obvious Second Language Acquisition component, several factors that make it a unique form of SLA: learning in a (post)colonial society, limited numbers of speakers, limited contexts for natural language use, limited learning materials diverse languages. Many adult learners are learning their language through the Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP) - a learner centred program where a learner and speaker are paired together. I discuss language revitalizaiton in this context.
