The Linguistic Capital of New Canadians and Social Inequality

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Framing of language as a form of ‘capital’ discloses the unique disadvantages experienced by non-English-speakers. This shift from material to non-material forms of capital highlights the other causes of inequality in society. Disparities in linguistic capital form the basis of a non-economic form of hierarchy. I will employ Bourdieu’s theory of capital as a foundation to explore the interconnection between language, identity, and inequality.
